Making the Orange Scones Recipe
- Preheat the Oven – Set your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest.
- Incorporate Butter – Add the cubed cold butter to the flour mixture and stir to coat. Use a pastry blender or your fingertips to mix until the butter resembles small peas.
- Prepare the Wet Ingredients – In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and fresh orange juice.
- Combine Mixtures – For the best results, make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Stir with a silicone spatula until the dough comes together, ensuring no dry pockets remain.
- Shape the Scone Dough – Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and fold it over itself 5-6 times. Form the dough into a 1-inch-thick circle and cut into eight equal wedges with a bench scraper.
- Chill – Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes. This helps them maintain their shape while baking.
- Bake – Bake for 15 minutes or until the scones turn golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes before glazing the top of the scones.
Making the Sweet Orange Glaze
- Prepare the Glaze – In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, orange extract, orange juice, and heavy cream until smooth and lump-free.
- Glaze the Scones – Dip the tops of the slightly cooled scones into the glaze and let any excess drip off. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.
How to Store These Scones
- At Room Temperature – Store leftover scones in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
- In the Refrigerator – If you’d like to keep them fresh longer, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Freezing – Wrap individual scones in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
Tips for Perfect Scones
- Use Frozen Butter – Grating frozen butter with a box grater ensures even distribution and creates flaky layers.
- Chill Before Baking – Freezing the scones before baking helps them hold their shape and enhances their texture.
- Don’t Overwork the Dough – A gentle touch prevents the dough from becoming tough.
- Bake on a Lightly Greased Baking Sheet – This prevents sticking and ensures even baking.
