Reasons You’ll Love These Beer Battered Onion Rings

  1. Crispy & Light – The beer batter creates a crunchy, airy coating that doesn’t feel heavy.
  2. Flavorful & Well-Balanced – The combination of spices and sweet onions ensures every bite is packed with taste.
  3. Perfectly Golden & Buttery – The mix of Butter-Flavored Crisco and canola oil results in a beautiful golden color and rich flavor.
  4. Great for Dipping & Snacking – Whether enjoyed alone or paired with your favorite dips, these onion rings are an irresistible treat!

Ingredients for Beer Battered Onion Rings:

Onion Preparation:

  • Sweet onions (3) – Their mild, slightly sweet flavor makes them ideal for onion rings, ensuring a well-balanced taste.
  • Flour (¼ cup) – Lightly coating the onions in flour helps the batter adhere properly.

Frying Ingredients:

  • Butter-Flavored Crisco – Adds a rich, buttery taste to the onion rings while contributing to a crispier texture.
  • Canola oil – A neutral oil with a high smoke point, ensuring the onion rings fry evenly and don’t absorb too much grease.

Beer Batter:

  • All-purpose flour (3 cups) – Provides structure for the batter, creating a crispy, golden crust.
  • Baking powder (1 tablespoon) – Adds lightness to the batter by creating air pockets as it fries.
  • Garlic powder (2 tablespoons) – Enhances the flavor with a savory depth.
  • Ancho powder or paprika (1 tablespoon) – Adds a mild smokiness and subtle heat, complementing the sweetness of the onions.
  • Black pepper – Provides a hint of spice and enhances the overall flavor.
  • Beer (24 ounces) – The carbonation makes the batter light and crispy while adding depth to the taste.

Seasoning After Frying:

  • Fine salt (¼ teaspoon) – Enhances the overall flavor, bringing out the natural sweetness of the onions and balancing the batter’s savory notes.

How to make Beer Battered Onion Rings:

  • Slice sweet onions into half inch rings. Place in bowl and sprinkle with flour, tossing to coat. Set aside.
  • In 7 quart pot, heat enough oil to come up 3 inches. We use a combination of canola oil and butter flavored Crisco. Use a thermometer to reach 375 F.
  • While oil is heating, make the batter. Combine all the dry ingredients and pour the beer in slowly. You are looking for a batter that is a bit on the thinner side. It should coat the onion, and hang on to it, but not too heavy. More like a thick glaze, than a frosting! Ha!
  • Pre-heat oven to 250F to keep onion rings warm while making them in batches.
  • Using your hands, drop a bunch of onions into the batter, coating them on all sides. Pull them out a few at a time to place into the hot oil, being careful not to get your hands too close to the hot oil. You can also use tongs if you would like. Put in enough onions to fill, but not crowd the pan. Cook for 2 minutes, turn, and cook for 1 more minute.
  • Using tongs, pull onion rings out onto a wire cooling rack that is in a sheet pan. Sprinkle with fine salt. We use popcorn salt. Place in oven to keep warm, and allow oil to come back up to 375F.
  • As you do the batches of onion rings, use a strainer to remove any settlement of cooked batter. Continue the process of batches until all onions are used up.
  • Onion rings will keep warm while you grill your burgers. We like to serve with ketchup, and chipotle mayo. Enjoy!

Notes

We use a combination of butter flavored crisco and canola oil. When we are finished making the rings, we allow the pan to set overnight. The crisco helps solidify it, then we can just wipe it out into the trash. The butter flavored Crisco also gives it some added flavor! You can replace ancho powder with chili powder or paprika.
