Blackberry Bourbon Sour: An Expertly Blended Cocktail

A Blackberry Bourbon Sour is a classic cocktail that’s guaranteed to set the tone for any party or gathering! The secret to its irresistible blackberry flavor lies in the use of perfectly ripe, juicy blackberries muddled with fresh citrus for a vibrant, tangy base. With its balance of simple ingredients and fresh fruit, this blackberry whiskey sour recipe has quickly become one of our favorite summer cocktails.

To elevate this cocktail, a generous pour of smooth bourbon (we’re partial to Woodford Reserve or other small batch labels) adds warmth and depth. A few dashes of bitters bring balance, while muddled herbs and citrus give this drink a refreshing edge. Whether you serve it in a rocks glass, old-fashioned glass, or elegant cocktail glass, this is one of those whiskey cocktails that always feels special.

And if you’re into experimenting, try swapping in blackberry brandy, a splash of blackberry liqueur, or even topping with club soda or ginger beer for a bubbly variation.

Why You’ll Love This Blackberry Bourbon Sour

  • Balanced Flavor Profile: A squeeze of fresh lemon juice, sweet orange, and muddled blackberries create a beautiful harmony with the bourbon’s richness.

  • Aromatic Experience: Muddling fresh rosemary at the bottom of a shaker releases herbal notes that pair perfectly with the fruit. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary, a cinnamon stick, or even a lemon twist for a little bit of extra flair.

  • Elegant Presentation: Thread sweet blackberries on a rosemary sprig for a gorgeous garnish. It’s an obvious pairing with warm summer nights, cocktails on the deck boards, and enjoying better days surrounded by mother nature.

Ingredients

  • Lemon juice – Bright, tart acidity that balances sweetness.

  • Orange juice – Adds mild citrus sweetness.

  • Blackberries – Infuse rich blackberry flavor.

  • Rosemary – An earthy, aromatic touch.

  • Simple syrup – Or a simple syrup mixture with new ingredients like honey or maple.

  • Bourbon – About 2 oz bourbon per drink.

  • Ice cubes – For chilling.

  • Large ice cube – Keeps flavor consistent.

  • Orange bitters – Subtle depth.

  • Optional – Egg white or raw egg for a silky texture, blackberry brandy for richness, or club soda for sparkle.

How to Craft a Blackberry Bourbon Sour

  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine lemon juice, orange juice, and all but 4 blackberries with a few rosemary leaves. Muddle blackberries well.

  2. Add the simple syrup and bourbon. For a velvety foam, add an egg white and shake once without ice before shaking again with ice (the whiskey smash method).

  3. Prepare the garnish by skewering 4 blackberries on a rosemary sprig. Add an orange peel or lemon twist if desired.

  4. Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously. Double strain into a glass over a large ice cube.

  5. Finish with a few drops of bitters, garnish, and enjoy.

FAQ & Fun Facts

Can I use frozen blackberries?
Yes — frozen work great for muddling. Save the fresh berries for garnish.

Can I substitute whiskey for bourbon?
Absolutely. While bourbon has its own character, classic whiskey is an obvious pairing here.

Can I make this for a group?
Yes! Scale it up into a large pitcher. Keep it chilled in an airtight container and let guests pour over ice.

Where is bourbon made?
Most bourbon comes from Kentucky, though you’ll also find it paired with traditional food in places like New Jersey.

Sipping a Blackberry Bourbon Sour is truly the best part of a warm evening. Whether you discover it from favorite bloggers, learn from a quick tiktok – make video, or shake one up yourself, this cocktail proves that simple ingredients and fresh fruit can turn any day into better days.
