Making dumplings on the weekend and throwing them into the freezer can give you a stress free dinner mid week, without take out! But wait, theres more! You might as well make a double batch and have both dumplings AND NAKED DUMPLINGS: AKA: MEATBALLS!
Now we have a party going! Try a bunch of dipping sauces! A tip for a party is stop for some sashimi or sushi from your favorite take out, and order EXTRA wasabi!! Then have this as an additional side with these!
Be sure to check out the meatball glaze that we made! Total yum city!
We serve them with a freshly made Asian salad for a warm, cool combo, but you do you!
Servings: 6 servings
Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of freshly grated ginger
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon garlic granules
- ¼ cup chopped chives or green onion
- 1 package gyoza wrappers
If making meatballs, ingredients for meatball sauce:
Orange Ginger Marmalade Sauce:
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 3 Tablespoons rice wine vinegar
- 3 Tablespoons Orange Ginger Marmalade
- 1 Tablespoon black sesame seeds
Instructions
Prepare meat filling:
- Place all ingredients except gyoza wrapper into a large bowl
- Mix gently with hands
Fill Dumplings:
- Open gyoza wrappers, and cover with a towel to prevent them from drying out
- For dumplings, fill each gyoza wrapper with about 1 teaspoon filling
- Using finger dipped in water, run along outside of dumpling
- Shut the wrapper, and ensure no air is inside
- Pinch shut, and gather, and set on a cookie sheet
- Continue to finish all
- Place in freezer for at least 30 minutes, up till overnight
Cook Dumplings:
- Heat a small amount of canola oil in a large fry pan and place frozen dumplings into pan
- Watch dumplings close and turn, once browned
- When dumplings are browned on each side, add in enough water to come up half way
- Cover, and allow to steam
- Steam for at least 20 minutes to ensure the meat cooks
- Uncover ½ way thru
- Allow water to steam off, until the dumplings get crispy
- Add additional oil if needed
Making Meatballs instead of dumplings:
- These dumplings are delicious as is. If you want to make them gluten free, you can prepare them as meatballs.
- Roll meat mixture into walnut size balls
- Brown on all sides over medium heat
- Place on a parchment paper covered cookie pan with sides
- Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10-15 minutes
Make meatball sauce:
- Mix together sauce ingredients
- Gently warm sauce in a pan
- Add meatballs to coat
- Serve on platter with picks for guests
Orange Ginger Marmalade Sauce:
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 3 Tablespoons rice wine vinegar
- 3 Tablespoons Orange Ginger Marmalade
- 1 Tablespoon black sesame seeds
- Either way, they are so delicious dipped into the savory, spicy sauce.
